- Madonna of Avello
The Madonna of Avello Sanctuary, covered on the inside with votive frescoes from XV – XVI centuries, dates back to the XVI century. A local legend orally hands down that a young deaf-mute shepherdess, while leading her sheep to the pasture on “Cerezzatese hill” , inserted her stick in the crevasse of a rock. After numerous tries to extract it ,she succeeded in her intent and thanks to this effort she gained her voice back. After she had reached the village, she hailed the fact as a miracle. People went up to the pasture and they found a statue of the Madonna. The villagers employed some oxen and tried to drag it down to the town, but the beasts stopped at mid way and refused to proceed.
